With the days getting longer and the weather getting warmer, we asked our salon experts if your hair can get brighter and blonder in one sitting!
Our Senior Colourist, Eryka Reid answers:
“Yes you can – but you must be willing to pay the price”
You see your favourite stars coming into the salon as sultry brunettes and come out blonde and beautiful! But can everyone do this?
Eryka says:
“Only 10% can book a stylist for the whole day as it is a complete transformation. Your hair must be in good condition to undertake this complete change! It’s a long and expensive procedure and your hair and wallet are going to be hit hard!”
“90% of our clients cannot go from dark to blonde as there are certain factors to consider when going on this journey.”
So what are the factors?
Will it suit me?
Skin tone
Eryka says this is an important question one must ask themselves before going on this journey.
Think about your skin tone, your eye colour and your natural hair colour.
If your skin tone’s undertone is quite a cool tone, you are best going for a cooler shade of blonde so it can complement your skin tone. Warm tones may not suit cool toned clients as it can wash them out.
If your undertone is neutral you can go two shades cooler or two shades warmer. Clients with neutral undertones can pull off either type! (Lucky them!)
For warmer undertones, a warm and creamy blonde shade will be paired wonderfully with your skin. A cool blonde on warm skin tones will look off and not suit the client.
Eye colour
Similarly, if you have predominantly fair features, you should go with a fair shade of blonde as a warmer shade of blonde can wash you out.
Natural Hair Colour
Of course, if you are going from dark hair to blonde your natural colour is a dark shade. However, this is an important factor because the darker your hair, the more stress and longer your blonde journey can be. We advise you speak to a qualified stylist if you are ready to undergo the Blonde Journey.
Hair condition
This is an important factor to consider as it all depends on your hair type and its condition if it can withstand bleaching and highlighting!
Eryka states that lightening hair to your preferred shade can take up to 3-4 applications all depending on the condition of the hair.
Due to bleaching and toning, hair can undergo a lot of chemical damage so one needs to take a break between appointments as well as getting hair treatments.
Protein rich treatments are perfect for chemical damage as it penetrates the hair strand and repairs it from within.
If your hair is coloured we give a deep cleanse so the undercoat comes through. We then continue to highlight the hair to achieve a blonde and beautiful look.
For virgin hair, we just highlight the hair for a gorgeous blonde look.
We use L’Oreal Smart bond for all our blonde clients as it protects hair during and after the service.
Cost
Many blondes will tell you that it is an expensive process – and it is. Not only will you have to pay for the services but the aftercare for blonde hair is crucial if you want to maintain the same shade until your next appointment.
Those who want to go blonde in one sitting must take out the stylist for an ENTIRE day and this could amount to nearly €600! In contrast, each application can cost from €150-€200.
Treatments, shampoos and conditioner specially formulated for blonde hair are costly but essential to keep you looking beautifully blonde, all the time!
